We have the sponsor, you may have the class. We are looking for a Y3 class in the UK.

There are many glorious things about the arrival of summer, but the rising cost of holiday childcare isn’t one of them!

The Family and ChildcareTrust says the expense could end up with more kids being left at home alone this summer.

The charity surveyed Britain’s nurseries and childminders and discovered that a week’s childcare in holiday periods now averages £109.23!

That’s a rise of 9.2 percent since last year and more than £100 for the first time.

Although it’s just a prediction, the charity’s chief executive, Anand Shukla, said that with many nurseries closing for the holidays and cuts to youth services, more children may be left unsupervised.

Its report found older school-age children were likely to be hit hardest.

The trust surveyed the 161 family information services based in local authorities across England, Wales and Scotland in May, asking them the average cost of holiday childcare in their area. Seventy-seven percent of authorities replied.

The report showed that paying for childcare for two children over four weeks of the holidays would cost parents more than £850 – way out of financial reach for many parents

Anand Shukla said: “We seem to be moving to a situation where childcare is increasingly thought of as something that affects only the under-fives.”

He said: “Our research shows that many local authorities are failing to fulfil their obligations to working parents, in particular those with school-age children who are poorly served or priced-out in many areas.”

Anand Shukla added, it’s “deeply disappointing to learn that such little progress has been made to meet the holiday childcare needs of older children”, adding to the burden of working parents.

The trust says childcare costs are rising faster than wages, and “we are likely to see more parents forced to take unpaid leave – or unable to afford to enter the labour market

“We need to ensure that recent proposals to allow schools to determine their own term times do not add to the problem.”

Meanwhile, the government has set up a Childcare Commission to look at making childcare more affordable. It’s expected to report soon.
